Beaverton, OR – October 27, 2015 — Starting now, all standard-format music and audio files on your MirrorLink®-enabled Android smartphone are controllable from your dashboard via the Vanilla Music player and RockScout, an app powered by MirrorLink®. The Car Connectivity Consortium made the announcement as more and more consumers seek responsible access to smartphone content while they drive.
RockScout is a simple download that brings MirrorLink compatibility to participating Android audio apps. Vanilla Music is an open-source music player that supports all common audio formats (MP3, OGG, FLAC, PCM) and features tag- and folder-based navigation; support for Android playlists; gapless playback for OGG and FLAC; and Replay Gain support.
“Format and platform agnosticism are really at the heart of both the MirrorLink and Vanilla Music brands,” said Ed Pichon, Application Certification Body of the CCC. “Vanilla Music takes disparate audio content and makes it available from a single launch point. MirrorLink applies guidelines on distracted driving across devices and cars such that drivers can responsibly access smartphone content on the road. It’s only natural the two would work hand in hand.”
RockScout leverages Media Browser Service, a standard Android API, to make Android audio apps compatible with MirrorLink. MirrorLink compatibility means apps are driver-aware and controllable via touch and rotary-knob infotainment systems. The Android application can be enabled without further development or integration, and the solution is free and open-source.
“RockScout is a zero-integration method for developers to make Android audio apps compatible with MirrorLink,” said Alan Ewing, President and Executive director of the CCC. “Thus RockScout has caught the attention of some of the world’s most iconic music and audio brands and signals a huge boost in momentum for the MirrorLink app ecosystem.”
MirrorLink is the most ingenious way to bring smartphone content to the dash. Huge icons make apps easy to use and smart technology knows if the car is in Park or Drive. Designed for maximum interoperability between a wide range of smartphones and cars, MirrorLink is the only OS- and OEM-agnostic standard for car-smartphone connectivity where no single entity has a controlling stake.
